R.O. DEMINERALIZERS • US NAVY Applications

The Village Marine RO Demineralizer was designed specifically to meet the need for high-purity deionized electronic cooling water for the AN/SPY-1D radar on the DDG-51 AEGIS destroyers. The RO Demineralizer also provides 2nd pass RO capability for gas turbine washdown and helicopter washdown applications. These units are installed aboard all DDG-51 Arleigh Burke class AEGIS destroyers and have been retrofitted on some CG-47 Ticonderoga class AEGIS cruisers. The RODM is qualified for MIL-S-901D HI Shock Grade A, MIL-STD-167 Type 1 Vibration, and MIL-STD-461 Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). The piping and vessels are constructed from passivated and electropolished 316L CRES. The piping is designed and constructed in accordance with MIL-STD-777. The electrical components are in accordance with MIL-DTL-2212 and threaded fasteners are in accordance with MIL-DTL-1222.

When operating in 2nd pass RO mode using 500 ppm TDS water as its source, the unit is capable of producing a minimum of 7,200 GPD or water with a maximum effluent concentration of 25 ppm TDS for various shipboard washdown applications.

When operating in the ECWS Makeup Mode using the 2nd pass RO unit effluent (25 ppm TDS) as its source, the unit is capable of producing a minimum of 7,200 GPD of electronic cooling water with a minimum of 15,000 total gallon production for each resin charge. The unit also has a SPY Polish mode, which recirculates the existing ECWS cooling water to maintain the required purity. The nominal water quality requirements are <0.5 ppm TDS and <0.5 ppm dissolved oxygen.

The RODM combines the three technologies of RO membranes, ion exchange resin, and gas transfer membranes into a single integrated system to provide a compact, robust, survivable, and maintainable unit with the unique capability to support the high-purity water needs of US Navy AEGIS-equipped surface combatants.
